Our History
The land on which Fairlawn Plaza Shopping Center exists today was originally farmland. In the early 1960’s, a Topeka businessman Charles R. Bennett purchased 160 acres from the Smith family, designating 30 acres for the construction of the Fairlawn Plaza Shopping Center. The shopping center was built by Bennett Construction Company who also built Kansas University’s Allen Field House and Kansas State’s original Ahern Field House in the early 1950's.
The first building to go up was a gas station at the corner of 21st and Fairlawn, followed by two anchor stores, Woolco and Jerry Lewis Theatres.
The Fairlawn Plaza Shopping Center has been a long-standing Topeka community supporter and has helped organizations like the Topeka Symphony, Mulvane Art Center, KTWU Public Television, Children’s Miracle Network, Friends of the Topeka Zoo, Helping Hands Humane Society, German-American Club of Topeka, Mexican Fiesta of Oakland, Arthritis Foundation, Topeka Civic Theatre, Visit Topeka, and most recently Children’s Discovery Museum.
